Since we’ve been living around the Metro New Orleans area for years, we can help you navigate the ins and outs of life here! Here are a few things you should know if you’re making the move to the Big Easy.
The Food
The food in New Orleans is legendary—and with good reason. There are a lot of influences present in the city, which means the flavors here are truly like no other. Creole and Cajun are two of the most popular styles of cooking, which include dishes like jambalaya, gumbo, crawfish boils, and po’boy sandwiches.
There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the city, ranging from beloved, decades-old institutions to new and inventive eateries. Compère Lapin is a James Beard award-winning restaurant blending French, Caribbean, and New Orleans flavors. Dooky Chase’s has been around since the 1940s and is known not only for delicious soul food, but also as a hot spot for civil rights, music, and culture (and served as the inspiration for Disney’s Princess Tiana!). Whether it’s Creole dishes or gourmet French cuisine, you’ll find it all around New Orleans!
The Festivals
Did you know that New Orleans hosts over 130 festivals every year? Music, food, local art, jazz music, cocktails, po’boys—there’s a celebration for pretty much anything and everything you can think of! In fact, the city even claims the title of Festival Capital of the World (and we think it’s well-deserved).
You can’t talk about festivals in New Orleans without mentioning Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is the festival of festivals, bringing parades, carnivals, food and drink, everything else you could imagine—not to mention over 1 million guests! Other big festivals in the city include the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the New Orleans Oyster Festival, and the Essence Festival.
