However, you can own your own slice of local history in one of East Jefferson’s many affordable communities. There are so many districts to love, and each one has its own unique flair. However, there’s one thing that they all have in common—they all feature a kind of beauty you won’t find anywhere else.

Metairie is considered New Orleans’ first suburb, and it’s a fabulous place to call home. This community is steeped with history and Southern charm, and it’s a quiet getaway from the city. Harahan is another historic neighborhood that has tons of picturesque homes. In fact, Harahan has been settled since the 1700s—taking a stroll through these streets is like stepping back in time!

When you escape to East Jefferson, you’ll find plenty of wide open space to enjoy. Here, there are tons of parks, trails, greenways, and lakes to explore, and they’re all close-by. One of our top spots is the Jean Lafitte Historical Park and Preserve. The park is one of the largest protected natural areas in the state, and there are tons of things to do, especially if you love hiking. It’s also a major historical site that teaches visitors about Acadian and Cajun culture.

Be sure to take a drive to Metairie and discover Lafreniere Park, too. This 5,000 acre park is perfect for everyone, especially young children. There are tons of playgrounds to explore, as well as walking trails and sports fields. It’s also a fantastic spot to learn about Louisiana’s local flora and fauna—residents often spot white ibises and black-bellied whistling ducks tucked between the trees.

Top-Notch Shopping and Dining

East Jefferson is the perfect blend of city convenience and suburban serenity, but don’t be fooled—there are plenty of shopping and dining opportunities just nearby.

Clearview Mall is the go-to shopping destination for many East Jefferson residents. They have plenty of larger retailers you’ll love, including JCPenney, GameStop, Bath and Body Works, and many more! New Orleans has some of the best cuisine in the country, and there are tons of restaurants in East Jefferson that capture that local flavor. Residents love Drago’s and Chef Ron’s Gumbo Stop for the perfect taste of New Orleans.
